I don’t know about you, but we have three babies in our home all in diapers. You can imagine our hurry to get at least one of them potty trained and out of those diapers! We’ve been working with our two and three year old, but it’s not something that happens over night. Believe me!
To be honest, potty training has been a difficult task. Many disappointments, but also some successes too. I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter how many times you try to explain to your toddlers what you expect from them, they are going to do it there way. So, I’m realizing more than ever it’s me who has to step back and let them do what they need to until they feel ready. I certainly don’t have all the answers to potty training success, but I have a few tips that have helped me so far!
1. Learn to take it easy on your toddler and to not focus on their failed attempts making it to the potty. Instead, be sure to really praise them, even when it’s not your idea of success. I’ve had to really force myself to say “good job for going on the potty”, even when they have clearly wet their diaper. This makes them feel great and gain some confidence!
2. Go on a little shopping adventure with your toddler and let them pick out some big boy or big girl underwear. Let them wear these over the diaper around the house, or if you are brave, without a diaper. This might allow them to feel more grown up and they may be more inclined to tell you when they need to go potty. I know our little boy would hate to have an accident in his Mickey Mouse big boy underwear!
3. Have a Plan B in place! Be prepared for when they do have those accidents! Because let’s face it, they will! Most toddlers don’t get it right the first time (or second, third, etc.). Our Plan B? Target‘s Goodnites Bed Mats. It’s something so easy to help you and your little one feel better going down for naps or for the night. We have had great success letting our little guy wear his Mickey Mouse big boy underwear for naps and having Plan B in place. So far, no accidents. I know there’s going to be a time when there will be one, but I can relax knowing we have these great bed mats in place. They are so easy to use and easy to throw away! Plus, I won’t have to worry about putting so much pressure on my little one. Right now, you can redeem a $1.50 promotional coupon for all GoodNites products. Which means if the bed mats aren’t your Plan B, perhaps Bedtime Underwear are more of your style! Simply click here to receive your coupon!
I know that this potty training thing feels like the end of the world sometimes, but really it’s not that big of a deal. It’s something every parent goes through and every toddler grows out of. So, I am just going to have to enjoy this phase as much as I can! Wow, did I really just say that?
