Working With Dote Magazine

Working With Dote Magazine

One of the many things I love about blogging are all the amazing opportunities that come from it. But especially when those opportunities are local! A few months ago, after we had just moved from California back to Canada, an old friend emailed me about a new lifestyle magazine here in Calgary: “I was reading my first Dote Magazine www.dotemagazine.com and thought of you: you need to be a contributor or columnist. It is very you. Check it out and maybe apply!” And I did a crazy thing. Something I would normally talk myself out of for fear of rejection…or sheer laziness. I contacted them. To my surprise, I heard back and even had coffee with the publisher and editor. They were truly lovely! We discussed my possible role and their vision for the overall magazine, as well as my contribution.  So, fast forward to today. I am now a lucky columnist for Dote Magazine. My column will be focused on fixing a design problem that plagues many different types of homes and introduce simple solutions. Mainly, I’ll be doing a lot of fun makeovers and styling a lot of fabulous spaces. Two words. Dream. Job.  Via Yesterday I got to hang out with a couple Dote ladies, Kate (the publisher) and Blair (their resident photographer)! We worked on my first project, which will be coming out in their 2nd issue! I am SO excited! But unlike the blogging world, you shoot WAY in advance for it to be in print months later. It’s a different world, but it’s a lot of fun to watch and learn this new process. The issue will be coming March 2015 ,...
Dreaming Up An Entryway Full Of Vintage Furniture

Dreaming Up An Entryway Full Of Vintage Furniture

As a lover of thrifted decor and flea market finds, it’s no surprise I’m dreaming up an entryway of nothing but vintage furniture! At Chairish.com, it’s like hitting the jackpot – but from the comfort of your own home! That’s right – no need to get out of your PJ’s for these kinds of shopping days!  I’ve put together a dream list of pieces I think would look amazing together in an entryway, if only I had a beautiful space for all of these! Am I right?!  1.  19th Century George III Style Mirror – A mirror is a great way to allow more light in the space, as well as frequent face and hair checking as you are running out the door! 2. Mid Century Brass Woven Basket – It’s great to bring in some sort of storage into your space for shoes, winter gear, umbrellas for rainy days or anything that tickles your fancy! And when it’s this good, it’s even pretty just as is! 3. Vintage Brass Antelope Bookends – This is just for viewing pleasure – to add some more personality to the space! Displaying your favorite books is a great way to make the room truly unique and your own. 4. Vintage Brass Pedestal Bowl – Brass is a must for me! It adds some bling to a sometimes dull space, plus a bowl like this can serve a great purpose! Such as storing your keys or mail as soon as you come in your front doors. 5. Richard MCarthy Mid Century Arm Chair – Every entryway needs a good chair (or bench) to make it easier putting on and...
Adventures in Chicago

Adventures in Chicago

You might have noticed it’s been a little quiet around here the last week. I might have forgotten to mention on the blog that I was taking off to Chicago for a week – sorry about that! If you follow me on Instagram, you probably figured it out with all the endless photos of our trip. This was the longest we’ve been away from our kids in a long time! I am SO thankful for my folks who watched them while we were away! The kids had such an amazing time with their Oma and Opa and that allowed me to really just enjoy the time away…because, let’s be honest, the two of us rarely get away together like this! I can’t tell you how AMAZING Chicago was! The first three days we attended an amazing conference in Elgin, IL. It was such a great way to begin the week refreshed and renewed. Day three we headed into Chicago by train – it was a fun little adventure! We walked across the city with our massive suitcase and quickly came to the realization that the pedestrians are crazy! They bravely walked across the streets whenever they felt like and I made the bad choice of being a follower with no fear…until you were playing a game of chicken with the traffic. Never. Again. I started obeying the law and watched the lights. We checked in to our hotel, which was at such an amazing location – walking distance to everything and super close to the “L” for easy access around the city. We were in and out, ready to seize the day! We headed...
Fall Jacket Two Ways

Fall Jacket Two Ways

It’s officially starting to feel like fall around here! Seeing as we are now in October, it only seems right to start pulling out those warm jackets and start dressing a little more accordingly! I’ve teamed up with Joules today to show how you can sport one of their gorgeous jackets two ways!! Dressy: Necklace | Top | Jeans | Boots Casual: Scarf | Top | Jeans | Boots If you are anything like me, investing in the proper jacket is a must for fall and winter! But not all of us can have multiple jackets to go with our multiple outfits, so I’ve picked a classic design that can be easily dressed up or worn casual! I love the style of this piece – it’s so streamline and feminine! Not to mention the color!  Ladies, navy is the new neutral – it just looks good with everything!! So, which look is your favorite? Stationary And Gifts That Inspire From Compendium

Stationary And Gifts That Inspire From Compendium

Today I’m sharing some of my favorite stationary and gifts that inspire me to think about staying organized in a stylish way! As we are preparing to move back to Canada in a few weeks, I am dreaming up a space where I can work on my blog in a more professional setting. These pieces by Compendium truly help me stay focused and on task!  Naturally, I’m attracted to the modern designs and bright pops of color in this collection. These pieces would make great additions to any office space and amazing gifts for friends and family!  I love the geometric patterns and pops of gold from these stationary pieces. They are both trendy and functional, which somehow help me stay organized – go figure! For my blog, I love to have journals that I can quickly jot down ideas for home projects, room design ideas and DIYs! Each journal has a fabulous burst of color and inspirational quote, which I need to read from time to time. I just love the green journal and the quote on the blue: “Take Epic Chances”. Aren’t they beautiful?!  I try to keep a good stock of cards that I can grab for those birthday celebrations, baby showers, anniversaries and special events in time of need. I am so forgetful and often run out of time to grab one, so I depend on these fabulous cards to save me in those instances! They are so fun and come with all kinds of clever quotes and sayings.  Also, these inspirational pop-open cards are so adorable! They would make great gifts also, but I kind of like them for myself. When I’m feeling a lack...
Flea Market Decor | Bird and Flower Lithographs

Flea Market Decor | Bird and Flower Lithographs

Last summer we went to a fun flea market in a cute little California coastal town! We found a few things, including these gorgeous Arthur Singer bird and flower lithographs! I don’t know what took us so long to put them up, but I am so glad we finally did! If you didn’t know, which I hadn’t at the time of discovering these prints, Arthur Singer is known as one of America’s best bird painters. I’m sure we’ve seen his work all around us, but never took notice until now. There is something to be said about his work. I find the images very nostalgic and peaceful.  We got a great deal for these prints! We only paid $20 for the four prints and customized wood frames. I thought about putting them in Violet’s room, but they didn’t really go with her decor. Our room is already filled with a very eclectic mix, mainly a collection of our favorite finds. It just seemed fitting in this space! The colors of each print are so unique, just as each image is. The wood frames are warm and compliment our mid century dresser. With the ceramic pineapple, it feels very retro in that little corner of the room!  I love discovering one of a kind pieces from flea markets – these prints are definitely a great addition to our home! Rachel Brown Prints

Rachel Brown Prints

On Sunday, we headed to LA for the day to hit up the Melrose Trading Post flea market! It was the perfect weather for treasure hunting and I’m already itching to go back! I even ran into Kelly from Studio DIY, which is HUGE for me people! I’ve been following her blog and Instagram for some time now (totally not creepy or anything…)! She was absolutely adorable and so sweet! Sigh… Well, naturally we found some fabulous things to bring home, including these gorgeous watercolor prints by Rachel Brown! I was instantly attracted to all her pieces, each one was so unique and beautiful. I knew we had to take a couple home, it was impossible to choose! We decided to go for a more neutral palette. I have always had a soft spot for llamas! I mean, looking at his little face just makes me smile and even giggle a little. They are so cute, but so odd at the same time! And of course, feathers are pretty awesome (she even threw  in that gorgeous Zebra – she was the sweetest!). I didn’t waste any time putting these prints up on the wall! I think they go perfect with every room in our home, they are just so versatile! I only wish I grabbed a few more! There were some larger prints that were really fun…including flamingos!!! I love her use of color! They really are the perfect piece to bring into your home to give it personality and a little character! Art is always  a great investment and you can never go wrong. I think we have...
Mid Century Dresser Turned Mini Buffet

Mid Century Dresser Turned Mini Buffet

A while back, I mentioned that we were thinking of replacing our old dining room buffet for something smaller and more mid century. I’ve been trying to keep my eyes peeled for something that felt right and although there is a lot out there, nothing stuck out to me. Then I spotted this Broyhill Sculptra Dresser! Yes, dresser.  There is something to be said about mid century furniture! I’m particularly attracted to the streamline pieces, with simple patterns and shapes. I don’t want anything too elaborate or fancy. This was perfect! The lines are so clean and straight, not to mention the legs!  The color of the wood is also perfect, it’s not too dark or light. It stands out nicely with the white walls and neutral pieces! Most of all, it was so cheap!   Although its purpose is to be used as a dresser, I decided we could use it as a side buffet to hold place mats, hot mats, table cloths, the kids bibs, extra serving ware and a few other pieces that can be more easily accessible. The top drawers will be great to help organize mail, so it’s not piling up on the table. Although, I need to make sure it doesn’t just become another dreaded junk drawer!  If all else fails, we can always use it as a dresser again! For now, I don’t want it to be hidden in any of the rooms. It’s just such a beautiful piece! This is definitely an alternative to a credenza or china cabinet! If you are looking for a smaller piece to serve a good...
Pineapple Finds

Pineapple Finds

I have to admit, I haven’t always been a fan of pineapples. But this fall, my husband and I came across some beautiful mid century brass pineapples at a flea market. I instantly fell in love with the pair and ever since then, we have been starting a little collection! We have a nice mixture of mid century finds with modern pineapple pieces! It’s the perfect balance! Here are a few of my favorite pineapple finds!  DIY Pineapple Clock / Black and White Pineapple Art / Pineapple Decals Geometric Pineapple Pillow / Brass Pineapple / Teak Pineapple Dishes Pineapple Lamp / Colorful Pineapple Print  So far, we have been lucky enough to have found the brass pineapples and teak dishes! I also found a beautiful porcelain pineapple at Home Goods and I would love to get a fun print for the house! Are you a fan of this look? XOXO, Lidy Feel free to leave a comment! Perfect Boots For Spring

Perfect Boots For Spring

I know back home in Canada, the snow is slowly starting to melt and spring is beginning to make it’s entrance. In California, we are pretty lucky to have spring-like weather every day! But regardless of where you live, the perfect spring boot is a must!  I am absolutely in love with this British based company, Joules! They offer some of the best selection of clothing, including these gorgeous Meadow Green Larkdale Womens Canvas Wellies! If you haven’t noticed, they are crazy about color and details!  I’ve ALWAYS dreamed of visiting Britian and learning more about their amazing heritage and visiting some of the most beautiful landscapes and castles I’ve ever seen. Not to mention, I am a huge, HUGE fan of Downton Abbey (as I’m sure you are too). So, if wearing some super cute wellies is as close as I’m going to get for now, I’ll take it!  I chose this Welly because of the beautiful countryside scene. I feel like I’m wearing art on my feet, it’s spectacular! Because of their durability and amazing quality, I’m not afraid to splash in puddles, get them wet or dare I say, dirty?! And yes, occasionally we do get rain and chilly weather!! They are just made to be worn and enjoyed!  Jacket / Tee / Skinny Jean / Studs / Welly These will be perfect all spring long! I love pairing them with comfy jeans, a relaxed top, a trendy jacket and basic jewelry! Best part is, I can wear them almost all year round when we return to Canada next year! Because let’s face it, it’s no...
