Thanksgiving makeover

Thanksgiving makeover

Thanksgiving makeover My husband and I decided that after three years of living with our brightly colored walls, it was time for a change! I couldn’t be happier.  Stage 1: A few years ago when we were moving into our home I was in such a rush to get some color on our walls. The walls were horrid. Here is a before picture when we first bought our home. It was a foreclosure and a huge fixer upper. I don’t know what we were thinking when I look back, but somehow we got through it and made it our home.  Stage 2: After picking out the colors for our home, we quickly realized that they were much to bright and overbearing. But when you have 15 people over to help get this project rolling, you go with the flow and suck it up. Too late for last minute changes. I think it ended up suiting my husband and I very well. We were a newly wed couple, young, artsy and childless. Why not have your house funky! Here is what our home looked like after the big renovation. As you can see it was a huge improvement, but still needs a bit of work. Notice the crazy patterns and old striped couch! Yikes, what were we thinking?!  Stage 3: Now, here we are looking at our home needing to update it again….I’m telling you. With these older homes, it’s always a battle. A fun battle though! Things have been moved in and out and all around. The walls, however, are still bright yellow in our living/dining area and red...

Tee Design Not too long ago, I was talking about what my husband and I wanted to get for my nephews first birthday! I made a couple designs and my husband and I decided on which one we felt was the best. I wanted it to be something that was unique and meaningful, I think we found just that. This is something we are going to make as a tradition and hopefully we will have a little collection of Tee shirts for the little guy (until it’s not cool anymore, that is). Here is the our little nephew modeling the final product. I think he looks ADORABLE in it! Couldn’t be happier! ...

DIY Teacup Candle Have you ever spotted beautiful tea cups at thrift stores or yard sales that you want, but have no use for? I have. I have debated whether I should just get them anyway because some of them are so beautiful and have no matching pair. I thought about how I could use them in my home as display in my kitchen, but our kitchen is far too small and lacks that kind of space. It would look much to cluttered and messy.  Here is a fantastic way for putting those cute cups to use! I can’t believe I never thought of this on my own, but at least I can purchase some of that fabulous china and not feel one bit guilty for it!  You will need: 1. teacup (saucer optional) – most of these can be found at thrift stores2. wax (microwaveable soy wax from a craft store, but they sell all kinds)3. candle wicks (at least 1″ taller than your cup)4. candle scent or dye (optional)5. microwaveable container6. hot glue gun7. thermometer Directions: 1. Clean your cup and saucer thoroughly and dry completely2. Place your wick in the center of your cup and glue the base down with a dab of hot glue. You can also purchase sticky wax for this step, but glue works fine.3. Heat wax and add in dye or scent according to package directions. Pour into container. You can gently adjust the wick to make sure it is straight after you poor the wax in.4. Let sit until the wax is cool and solid5. Trim wick down to 1/4″ And...

Typography as Wall Art It’s amazing how simple words positioned in specific ways can make such beautiful art. I am taking a class in Typography as part of my art major and find it so inspiring. It’s both fun and challenging, which is my kind of class.  Recently a couple dear friends of ours got married. I wanted to send them off with a gift that was personal to them and something they would be able to keep over the years and forever remember that special day together. I created a piece of art using Typography that would be meaningful to them. This was the result. Thankfully, they both loved it! ...

Master room makeover The other day I glanced at my room in mild satsifaction. We’ve lived in our home for 3 years now, which to me is crazy. I can’t believe it’s been that long! Since then, our room has been a collection of both our old belongings. A black and white portrait of Audrey Hepburn to orange and green print pillows from Sri Lanka. Our styles might have clashed a little, but we both found a style that we love. My hope is to give our master room a makeover over the next few months. It will have to be gradual, since we can’t just whip out hundreds of dollars for a room people might not ever see. It’s more for us: a sanctuary in our home. A few months ago we came across a large piece of art at a yard sale. It was a picturesque scene, like something we would see back home in Canada or driving up through northern California to the beach. It was lovely and relaxing to look at. We decided to be thrifty once more and purchased it for $5. It now hangs over our bed as a non-tradional headboard. I love it, it’s perfectly us! I want to keep the colors simple, since our walls are very green Since the room is going to based off of our new art piece, I did a little browsing online and found some items I would love to add to our room. Some of which are expensive, so my hopes are to splurge on one of them and do some shopping around for the others....

Inspired by vintage Adorable Laundry room I have been putting together little inspiration boards up in my head lately. There are so many cute ideas out there for decorating your home and I don’t know what direction I would want to go. If only someone could hire me to just do all the work….decorate! I could get some of these creative juices flowing. For my home, I just love too many things: I love the simple grays, the white on white with bursts of color, the beach look, the modern look, and even the eclectic and funky look. What to do?!  Luckily, we won’t be doing any remodeling anytime soon. My hopes are to redo our guest room in the near future, so I am tossing around ideas until we can use the room for something very special.  These are a few items I was inspired by today. Who knows what it will be tomorrow! I just spend way too much time browsing the web. Simple alarm clock Displayed vintage ware Vintage tins…we have a lot of these Mix a bit of modern with vintage Fun entryway  Darling room...

Sweetest little nephew is turning 1 Just a few months old I can’t believe a year has come and gone since my little nephew Logan was born! I’m not even his mother and I am in shock! He is the sweetest little boy you can imagine….he sucks his little thumb and everything. He has the most enduring smile and steals your heart the moment he looks at you. I am in love with the little man.  This year, my brother/sister-in-law decided to have his birthday a little early this year so everyone could make it. Unfortunately, my husband and I are the only ones that won’t be able to be there! It’s sad, but true. Silly how work has to get in the way…you know 😉I went ahead and started thinking of what we could get him for his first birthday. Hoping to maybe send it to them so he can open it the day of his party. We both wanted something a little bit unique and special from his aunt and uncle. We found one of his gifts from a funky interior store in Ventura, CA. That I won’t give away….although I don’t think any of my husbands family reads my blog. So, we might be safe! The second gift we found was on a site called Uber Prints, which is a fantastic website I am hooked to! You can make your own T-shirts and design them with their fonts, images, etc (which there are many pick from) or you can upload one you made from home. It was a lot of fun playing with different ideas. I...

4 is the magical number Since I won’t be here tomorrow to dedicate this post to my brilliant husband, I will do so today! Tomorrow marks our 4th wedding anniversary. I cannot believe it. I know we are still in the early years of our marriage, but it doesn’t feel that way at all.  Most of our family members and friends know that we have been through all sorts of tribulations in the last 4 years. Some, I don’t know how we ever got through except by the grace of God. I am so blessed to have such an amazing man in my life. He has stood by my side through thick and thin. I have fallen more in love with him through these difficult times in our marriage, thinking it to be impossible.  This year, just for fun, I decided to design a little card for him. I wanted it to have a little vintage and retro flare, but I added a little extra as well. I’m not too sure if I will try this again or if he will even like it (I guess he will love it no matter what, cause its from the heart), but why not?  So, to my dearest and most precious husband. I love you more and more each year we spend together. I am so excited for what the future holds for you and I. I know that no matter what may come, we will be just fine if we stick together. Thank you for all you do for me and the love you show each and every day. I’m a...

Eye Chart I was on Etsy the other day and came across this awesome Eye Chart art. Although they are affordable, I thought it would be nice to try it out on my own and see how it turned out. I chose a couple of scriptures that are meaningful to me and pay as a positive reminder in my life. Not that I don’t like cute quotes here and there, but if I am going to see it everyday on my wall I would rather it have deeper meaning to me. (I also love it in different colors, super cute)!  I did two side by side. This is my first attempt and it’s not too bad. I would like to take more time and perfect it a bit more. I see little errors here and there that are a little bothersome (probably from all the things my graphic design prof pointed out when it comes to typography). Nonetheless, I love the concept and can’t wait to see what it looks like in print!!!...

Bamboo Pen and Touch After a long day of work, I was greeted by a strange box outside my backdoor. It was addressed to me and I was very curious….? Once inside, I quickly opened up the box to discover an amazing belated Christmas present from my wonderful friend, Jenelle! Too bad she is so far away (living in the whimsical land of Canada), otherwise I would have given her a BIG hug!!!! She knows I am enrolled in the Graphic Design program and start my classes this Monday, in fact. Crazy! So, she bought me the most amazing piece of technology….the Bamboo Pen and Touch. This little thing is going to be SO useful in my classes and assignments. It can do all sorts of wonderful lovelies: edit pictures, draw, paint, doodle, make personalized cards by creating embellishments and borders, digitally handwrite greetings and even play a few games. I am touched by her thoughtfulness and generosity…..thanks my dear friend! If you are interested in design or photography, be sure to check out this new tool. I’m sure you will be finding it very useful, I know I will!  *note: photos are not my own...
