Thrifty Finds: Brass Bowl Turned Planter

Thrifty Finds: Brass Bowl Turned Planter

Another Thursday, another thrifty find! I came across this lovely brass bowl a few weeks ago and decided it would make the perfect planter!  I love any kind of metallic decor, whether it be copper like I used for our front entrance or pops of brass like this little collection on our buffet! It’s great for all seasons, but I’m especially loving it for fall!  Brass still has the earthy tones I love, but with a little bling! I feel like when I add brass or copper to my space, it instantly brightens it up. Plus, you find them by the dozens at thrift stores and they are always cheap!  This bowl is working great as a planter, it’s fun to use it for other purposes other than the obvious! You can always make it a bowl again – perhaps for fruit or decor items? The options are always there!  Are you over brass yet or are you still loving it a little like I am?! Thrifty Finds: Mid Century Walnut Buffet

Thrifty Finds: Mid Century Walnut Buffet

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time to share our recent Thrifty Finds! To be honest, it’s been a few weeks since we went to any thrift stores. Then earlier this week we thought we would just get out of the house for a bit. I am so glad we decided to take a peek in the shops that day, as soon as I walked into our local thrift store I was smacked in the face. We spotted this gorgeous beauty!! Yes, it was just waiting there for me. Or so I told myself. It was in pretty rough shape and didn’t even want to know how much they were asking. To my surprise she asked $40. As Joel and I discussed whether this was something we really wanted to take home with us, she came back and said if we take it that day (so she could bring out some strollers mind you) she would sell it to us for $35. SOLD! How can you walk away from that?!  It had been pretty beaten up. There were some very visible scratches and damage to the wood that went deep. When we got it home, we scrubbed it with soapy water and scoured the entire piece with a course scouring pad and lemon oil. Then again, but with a fine scouring pad. We considered sanding the piece, but because of the depth of some of these scratches we were afraid we would compromise the top layer of veneer. We just put a lot of elbow grease into it and it actually improved substantially! We managed to get rid of a lot of the damage...
Thrifted Chrome and Faux Walnut Round Table

Thrifted Chrome and Faux Walnut Round Table

Since moving into our new home, our list of to-dos keeps growing! From painting, to changing out lighting to putting new flooring in. These things will eventually happen, but for now we are doing what we can and making do!  Our kitchen has a significant amount of space compared to our previous one. We plan on building a breakfast nook and so we’ve been on the look out for a table that’s big enough for our family to eat small meals together, but not too big as to take up all the kitchen space.  While thrifting around town, we stumbled upon this chrome and faux walnut round table that was the perfect size. It’s a bit more commercial than we had hoped, but for $15 we couldn’t be picky! It fits perfectly in the space and doesn’t look too bad with our chairs and decor.  So far, it’s been great for the kids to enjoy their breakfasts in the mornings. We’ve had dinner as a family a few times and have enjoyed this little space in our kitchen! We hope to have a built in bench soon with extra storage to go along with this table soon. I think it will make it look a little more cozy!  The chrome and faux walnut are always a lovely match, but I’ve been wondering…should we paint the table top white or leave as is? The walls will also be white and the flooring will also be replaced down the road. For now, I think this space serves it’s purpose and I’m just so happy for all the extra room we have in...
Mid Century Desk Organizer

Mid Century Desk Organizer

We recently came across this cute mid century desk organizer at Salvation Army. I think we paid $1 for it…how can you say no?! It was a little worn and scratched up, so we put some new life in it again!   We sanded it and re-stained it, as well as gave the brass some shine! I love how it looks like new. You just don’t see organizers like this anymore – I especially love it paired with my Revamped Green and Gold Desk!  I try to keep organized when I can. I can have my to-do lists and sketch books handy. As well as pens, tape and other easy to find pieces! It’s great not having to rummage through the drawers or panic when I need to find something in a hurry.   Not to mention, it’s a great way to add a little color and texture to the desktop! I can work efficiently and in style. Love those mid century touches, no matter how big or little! What do you think?! XOXO, Lidy  Feel free to leave a comment! Thrifty Finds: Vintage Rattan Swivel Rocker

Thrifty Finds: Vintage Rattan Swivel Rocker

I should be purging and packing, but instead I find myself trying to escape all the stress and do a little thrifting! My plan is just to always “look”, which most of the time I do. But my last trip to Salvation Army I spotted this amazing Vintage Rattan Swivel Rocker and I pretty much knew it had to be mine….if the price was right of course!  I saw some on Chairish a while ago that I fell in love with, but sadly they were way out of my price range. Ever since then, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled but they are so rare! I love the 70s vibe and the potential it has. It needs to be refinished and reupholstered, although I don’t find the yellow all that horrible. I’ve even thought about detaching the bottom and converting it into a swing chair – how fun would that be?! Best part is, I only had to pay $30 for this beauty!  For now, I’m dreaming of where I should put it in our new home! I cannot wait to redecorate all that space. I feel so lucky that we get two living room spaces, which means so many possibilities! I even have a space for a studio, so I’m wondering if I should just put this lovely piece in there? We will see!  Have you found anything recently while thrifting that you just couldn’t resist? P.S. There’s still some fun happening for our Back To School Series! Thrifty Finds | Brass Leaf Dishes

Thrifty Finds | Brass Leaf Dishes

Anytime we visit a flea market or thrift store, my eyes always seem to gravitate toward all the shiny metallics. Especially if they are those unique pieces you don’t come across everyday. When my eye caught site of these brass leaf dishes, I scooped them up right away!  I love them together as a sort of mini collection. They would be cute used as jewelry organizers for rings and bracelets on a dresser. They also look perfect as is, with their intricate designs!  They have all sorts of potential! So happy we came across these and perhaps we will find some more like them down the road someday! We will see!  What’s your favorite find lately? XOXO, Lidy Feel free to leave a comment! Maps and Brass

Maps and Brass

If there are two things I feel I have a hard time walking away from at thrift stores, it’s maps and brass. They are two things I see everywhere and two things that look great in any style of home!  Maps seem to evoke so much emotion for so many people. Whether they are places we lived, destinations we traveled to or a reminder of where we would love to be! Maps are just awesome, wouldn’t you agree?! When I came across this raised relief map of California, I could NOT walk away. This map is going to be a very sentimental piece for a long time. We are leaving in just a couple months and I know there are going to be days I am SO homesick for California. This will be a piece to truly remind us of our time here and how blessed we were to live in such an amazing place!  As much as I love brass, I don’t just grab anything I can get my hands on. To me, there is a fine line between good and bad brass pieces. The rule I use for myself when looking at brass is, does it remind me of my childhood in the 90s. If yes, I usually walk away! It seems too early to start redecorating my home with those pieces just yet. It’s all about the 60s and 70s for me and a few exceptions like this fabulous brass caribou!   And some how, it’s magic when they are placed side by side! The whole corner of that little space has changed dramatically and I love it!...
Cheerleading Megaphone

Cheerleading Megaphone

Yesterday, our family went on a little road trip to hunt for some treasures. It was the perfect thing to do, instead of being inside all day! We came home with a couple little things, but I had to share this funky cheerleading megaphone with you!  I love quirky pieces, a pop of blue and any kind of typography! It’s an instant eye-catcher and great conversational piece. Mostly because it’s just so random, kind of weird and a little bit fabulous.  There were actually six of these guys, but there was no way we needed them all. One even had a lightning bolt, which was amazing. But we had to go for one of the letters, it’s just one of those things that won’t ever go out of style.  Sometimes you come across some awesome typographical pieces, but can’t find one that’s personal to you. I don’t ever let that stop me, sometimes things don’t have to make perfect sense to fit into your home esthetic. I was on the look out for a “D” for our last name, but no luck. We picked “S” because it was the one in the best shape. It also doesn’t hurt that our son’s name is Sebastian, but in all honesty that’s not why we picked it. Plus, I think we’ll keep it somewhere where little hands can’t touch it!  I can’t get enough of these one-of-a-kind pieces that really bring that character of your home to life. To me, it’s all about how your personality comes out of the decor that makes your home unique and special.  XOXO, Lidy Feel free to...
Thrifted Wooden Pineapple Bowls

Thrifted Wooden Pineapple Bowls

A few months ago, we came across these adorable wooden pineapple bowls at Salvation Army. They were too cute and cheap to say no to, I think we paid $2 for these beauties!  So far, they have been put to good use. Not only do they look lovely sitting on a shelf as simple decor, but they made great serving bowls at Holden’s Tropical themed birthday last week.  I love the retro feel of these pieces and how well they go with the rest of our decor. I’m really tempted to try a little DIY like this, but I’m too scared to ruin them! But seriously, how cute are those?! I’m pretty sure my Oma had something like this in her home when I was growing up. That, and the retro wooden fruit which I might need to track down somewhere!  What do you think of these cute bowls? How come Pineapples are so much fun?!  XOXO, Lidy You can also follow Hello Lidy by email, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter,...
Light Fixture Turned Snowglobe

Light Fixture Turned Snowglobe

Did you know you can repurpose those old light fixtures into some fun looking snowglobes this holiday season?! It’s so easy, you can be done in a matter of minutes!  You can find any sort of light fixture at a thrift store – preferably globe shape! Simply, turn your light fixture on it’s bottom and unscrew. Remove the glass. Put a small amount of tape over the hole where the wiring goes through. I placed a good amount of my faux snow on the bottom and added a fun graphic tree and a little fawn.  While the glass was removed, I took a gold leaf pen and created some fun mid century snowflake designs to the outside. It’s not too obvious, so it doesn’t distract from the scene. It’s such a simple and easy way to add a fun little touch to your holiday decor! Besides, who doesn’t like to repurpose something every now and then!  What do you think of making your own snowglobe? XOXO, Lidy Feel free to leave a comment!
