This past weekend we decided to get out of town. What an adventure it turned out to be! A drive that should only take 3 1/2 hours ended up taking MUCH longer. The traffic was pretty crazy, considering it was the long weekend. The sun was blazing in the car, making everyone pretty cranky. So cranky in fact…

I remember hearing this gurgling sound from the back of the car. The kids have been pretty sick with the cold for a few days. I was thinking it was coming from their nose? Or mouth? What the heck is that sound?! I turned around to see my little girl looking as shocked as I, when a stream of vomit came out from her mouth. EWWWW! Seriously, what the? We made an emergency pit stop at the closest exit. In chaos and panic, my husband and I jumped out of the car before it completely stopped. We unhooked the seat and took her out, removed her soiled clothing, wiped her down and wiped her down some more. We did our best to ignore the smell that now resided in our hot car. Windows down my loves, this is going to be a LONG drive. If we only knew…

No more than 15 minutes later, there was that sound again. SERIOUSLY? As I turned around, I saw the sheer disgust in my eyes – in his eyes – as I realized our little boy was now releasing a stream of vomit from his mouth. Oh. My. Gosh. We have contracted the flu. And we are only 20 minutes from our destination. Please, God be merciful! Again, we found ourselves searching for that nearest exit. This time, a very upper class neighborhood. Nothing but gated communities and Lexus cars. Who are these people?! Please don’t be offended as we remove our puking kids from our very smelly car. For the second time now removing the soiled clothes. This is what it’s really like being a parent, right? Doing things you really didn’t signed up for – jokes on me. But I would do it again and again.  If it wasn’t for the laughter and smiles in the back, reminding me why it’s worth it all. Why I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world, but that puke-y, hot smelly car.

Needless to say, we made it to the beach and had a great time with family. It was perfect weather and we made some more perfect memories. That’s what makes up a happy life these days. All those compiled memories you hold on to. The ones you visit often when things are down and rough. You laugh at those moments that were once far from laughable. I am so grateful for the memories I have locked away. How about you?

XOXO, Lidy
