Scandinavian Inspired Christmas Tree Ornaments

Christmas is almost nearing and I’m getting super excited! Every year, I try to make at least one handmade ornament to add that personal touch to our tree. This year, I wanted to try something a little more bold and modern. I stuck with very clean and simple colors: black, white and pops of metallics (mostly gold and silver).  These Scandinavian inspired Christmas tree ornaments take 5 minutes to make – they are so easy!  Materials Black leather Scissors Hot glue gun Ornament hooks Directions Gather what you need. Begin by cutting triangles with your scissors until you have the amount of trees you are looking for. I did quite a few so I could evenly disperse them on our tree. Hot glue three triangles together to create a tree. Hold the triangles firmly together while the hot glue is cooling so there is good contact! Otherwise, the hot glue will peel off quite easily. Take your scissors and make a slight cut in the top triangle for your hook to go through, then hang to enjoy!  I love the graphic element it adds to our tree! It feels very minimal and I love it – it’s quite refreshing to be honest! These would make great little gifts for family and friends. I also have a few other plans for these little guys, so stay tuned!  XOXO, Lidy Feel free to leave a comment! You can also follow Hello Lidy by email, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter,...

Working With Dote Magazine

One of the many things I love about blogging are all the amazing opportunities that come from it. But especially when those opportunities are local! A few months ago, after we had just moved from California back to Canada, an old friend emailed me about a new lifestyle magazine here in Calgary: “I was reading my first Dote Magazine www.dotemagazine.com and thought of you: you need to be a contributor or columnist. It is very you. Check it out and maybe apply!” And I did a crazy thing. Something I would normally talk myself out of for fear of rejection…or sheer laziness. I contacted them. To my surprise, I heard back and even had coffee with the publisher and editor. They were truly lovely! We discussed my possible role and their vision for the overall magazine, as well as my contribution.  So, fast forward to today. I am now a lucky columnist for Dote Magazine. My column will be focused on fixing a design problem that plagues many different types of homes and introduce simple solutions. Mainly, I’ll be doing a lot of fun makeovers and styling a lot of fabulous spaces. Two words. Dream. Job.  Via Yesterday I got to hang out with a couple Dote ladies, Kate (the publisher) and Blair (their resident photographer)! We worked on my first project, which will be coming out in their 2nd issue! I am SO excited! But unlike the blogging world, you shoot WAY in advance for it to be in print months later. It’s a different world, but it’s a lot of fun to watch and learn this new process. The issue will be coming March 2015 ,...

DIY Fireplace Mantle Facade

This is the first time I’ve ever had a fireplace in a home! It was at the top of my list when we were house hunting and I am so pleased we found a beautiful home with one!  Our fireplace was a little outdated and it had no mantle. Although I was perfectly content with that, I debated how we could modernize it just a bit. Joel and I discussed possibly painting the stone white or black, but it seemed so permanent and you always run the risk of losing the personality of your home. The problem was, the stone was just too much, especially after we painted our living room white!  Then it dawned on me that we could just build a custom mantle. We decided to design a modern and minimal mantle, keeping it as simple as possible. Joel created a facade, but it’s really hollow and obviously not attached.   Because it’s not securely attached, we made a simple solution of placing eye hooks to stabilize the mantle to the wall. This would ensure the mantle wouldn’t fall and possibly hurt one of the kids! We also added a piece of solid Douglas Fur wood to the top of the mantle to soften the overall look and give it more flow.  I love how it turned out! It changes the look of the entire room – it feels more modern, but without losing that original stone. It’s essentially the best of both worlds. It softens the overall look of the living room and creates a more inviting and warm environment. Best part is, I now have a fun little space to decorate...

Dining Room Reveal and Tour

Today’s the day – the dining room reveal and tour!! I’ve been waiting for this moment for quite some time! After much planning, painting the walls from green to a crisp white, hanging our modern and geometric wallpaper and installing a gorgeous new light fixture, the room is ready to make it’s debut! You might recall our dining room sneak peek when we first moved in? Well, it’s come along way – wouldn’t you say?! Without further adieu, welcome to our new and improved dining space!   A HUGE shout out to Sherwin-Williams, Walls Republic and Schoolhouse Electric and Supply Co. for making this project possible – without you, this makeover would not have been this fabulous!  XOXO, Lidy Feel free to leave a comment! Hello Makeover: New Light Fixture

I am THRILLED about today’s post to say the least! This is truly the cherry on top – that finishing touch that makes the “wow” factor of the space come to life! If there is one thing I can stress when it comes to any room makeover, it’s invest in good lighting!! It seems like something no one will notice, but it’s really the first thing they will see when it’s done right!! Joel and I have been a HUGE fans of Schoohouse Electric for as long as I can remember. They have the most amazing furniture, home accessories, hardware, jewelry, of course lighting and so much more!! I am beyond excited to have partnered with them for this design project – it’s been such an honor to have one of their timeless pieces in our home! In the beginning stages of designing the dining space, the lighting was always between this and this piece – although, it’s impossible to choose when every single fixture is CRAZY gorgeous. We found them both potentially perfect for our dining space. The Brass City Chandelier 7 was clean and simple! I loved the exposed bulbs and mid century inspired design. But it just felt safe to us and I really wanted to take a risk this time around!  We finally decided on the Plaza Chandelier! We knew all that brass would stand out and make a strong statement against our dark geometric wallpaper, as well as the newly painted white walls. I just love the ambiance this fixture creates with the glow of the shades, creating this warm and inviting environment!  I cannot tell you how solid this fixture...

Hello Makeover: Hanging Wallpaper

I’m back with another update to our dining room makeover! It’s starting to come together friends and I am SO excited! We recently repainted the room white, which if you haven’t seen yet, you can find that post here! This week, we hung the wallpaper and I must say, it already looks dramatically different! We collaborated with Walls Republic on this project, which was such an incredible experience! Their selection and quality of wallpaper is so fantastic – we had no problems whatsoever. I should also say a huge thanks to all of you who shared your input and suggestions on which wallpaper to go with. You might remember our top picks  here. It was hard to decide, believe me, but we finally decided on this one. It took a lot of consideration, but in the end these were our reasons why we chose the Slate Hexagonal design: 1. We wanted something a little more modern and bold and this one seemed to fit both those categories. 2. We wanted the dining space to have a dramatic feel and also a very distinctive atmosphere, unlike the other rooms in our home. 3. Lastly, although the wallpaper is black, we felt the pattern was very mid century inspired and could feel a little more timeless than the other wallpapers we were considering. As soon as we started putting the first panel of paper up on the wall, I knew we made the right choice! Introducing wallpaper into your space can be very scary and daunting. Which is why some people stay away from it altogether. But I always tell people who are on...

Styling a Gallery Wall

I’ve been wanting a gallery wall in our home for quite some time! We just have so many more walls to work with in our new home, it seemed such a waste not to. Thankfully, I had the amazing opportunity to team up with Better Homes and Garden for a styling session centered on the collection of Artfully Walls prints to be featured in the November issue of BHG this month! Of course, I could not refuse!!   To be honest, you really need to be prepared and intentional if you want your gallery wall to look amazing, so here is an easy how-to that I borrowed from here – and it works wonderfully!!   1. Start by deciding where you want your gallery wall! Try displaying your art on a wall no one would expect, such as your staircase!  2. Pick out a few of your favorite pieces to display in your gallery. I picked a mix of art that really created a warm and inviting atmosphere as soon as our guests walked through the front door. While making their way up the stairs, our company can peek into some of our favorite pieces we’ve collected from favorite shops, flea markets and thrift stores! 3. Trace your frames on newspaper, cut with scissors and tape to the wall.  4. Play around with different arrangements and see what feels right to you. You’ll know when you see it!  5. When you have the arrangement you love, you can start hanging your art by replacing the newspaper on the wall with your picture! It’s that simple! Just make sure to pre measure where your print will hang before making any holes in...

Hello Makeover: Painting Walls White

The dining room makeover is in full swing people! There is so much planning, time and a whole lot of energy that goes into these projects. But it is so worth it all! We’ve partnered with Sherwin-Williams to give this space a much needed overhaul! This, my friends, is beyond exciting!  A couple years ago, Sherwin-Williams introduced designer-inspired interior and exterior paint colors (wallpapers too!) to US homeowners. It had such positive feedback that HGTV and Sherwin-Williams decided to release their amazing products into Canada as well!  I was so lucky as to have the honor of giving HGTV Home By Sherwin-Williams a try and I must say, I am without a doubt sold! I can’t help but get just a little excited when I find paint that not only looks amazing, but has fantastic quality that I know I’ll just keep going back for more! So, good-bye green walls that were just not right for me and hello fresh white walls! In the end, we went with Incredible White (7028), which was the perfect shade for us! This is just a little sneak peek of the room transformation, but I will be giving you a formal introduction soon, so stay tuned! Also, you might have noticed my official project hashtag on Instagram, #hellomakeover? I wish I could take all the credit, but really it was all Joel’s idea. It’s a fun way to see what we are doing in each space in our home. Feel free to follow along!  What are your thoughts on white? P.S. Bring Vegas Home

When I was asked by Vegas.com to be part of the Bring Vegas Home challenge, I couldn’t refuse! They asked me to put together a room design based on The Cosmopolitan hotel as my inspiration. What really caught my eye were the beautiful hotel suites! Here is what I came up with!  1.  I noticed the suites had beautiful, bright lighting. In my room design, I picked this lighting because of it’s warm brass color and unique shade shape! 2. The large black and white prints give the room a classic and timeless look, like these prints here and here. 3. The bedding was clean and simple, but I threw in a few modern pieces from here and here to give it a little more personality! 4. I loved the mirror in the suite with that lovely design, so I wanted to add a little bling to create the same effect. Something that would similarly catch your eye, much like this one. 5. The furniture in the suites had nice curves, were simple and had classic shapes. A chair like this one is a must! 6. The touches of natural wood in the hotel suite really created a welcoming environment, so adding a side table like this will create the same feeling. 7. Having a bold rug can create an instant sense of style and tone to the space and this one would be a fabulous addition to the other pieces in the room. 8. The pillows in the suite were very asian inspired, giving the room a very distinct vibe. Pillows like this, this and this are very similar in style! 9. The bed is the...
