Wednesday’s Wishlist

I’m back with another Wednesday’s Wishlist! The weather has been so amazing here lately (knock on wood), but I know soon enough that will all be changing. I’ve gathered some seasonal favorites this week to prepare for the cold months ahead!  I am very intrigued by these brass Snake Candleholders! I’m thinking they would be perfect for Halloween decor and I would even go as far as keeping these out all year round!! Aren’t they fabulous?!  Cold weather means dressing a little warmer! These Plaid Socks are a must for the mister!  I might already own this Plaid Scarf in red, but I love it so much I would go back and buy another! It’s both ridiculously cozy and very trendy for the upcoming season!  I’m making the kids play outside as much as possible while the weather is cooperating. But soon enough, they will be indoors  a little more often. Why not plan ahead with some fun craft ideas in this Martha Stewart’s Favorite Crafts for Kids? I think so!  Hope your week has been treating you well so far!  XOXO, Lidy Feel free to leave a comment!  You can also follow Hello Lidy by...

Updated Kitchen Lighting

Hey all! I’m back from a lovely break with my family celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving! Yes, I’m stuffed to the bone and ready to take on the rest of this week.  I’ve teamed up with Lamps.com today to share with you our fabulous updated kitchen lighting! (Don’t mind our cream walls – painting will definitely be in the near future). Now let’s be honest, our lighting before wasn’t horribly out of date. A matter of fact, it was quite bearable and we would have been happy to have kept it around if need be. But it just wasn’t the right fit. Why settle when there are so many options out there that are not only trendy, but affordable! When Lamps.com asked if I was interested in working with them, I couldn’t say no! They have such a lovely selection of lighting and I knew we would find that perfect piece to hang in our kitchen nook area. We took down our old lighting and the space already began to feel more cohesive. We finally decided on this chandelier by Hinkley. It’s simple, current, but still has that mid century vibe to tie in all our other existing pieces! The brushed brass look is subtle, which is what I wanted for the kitchen. I didn’t want it to appear too formal, since this room was more of our casual eating area.  The lighting before sort of blended into the background and really didn’t stand out at all. Now we have a beautiful piece that’s functional and the perfect compliment to our DIY marble top table and thrifted buffet! It’s a lovely accessory...

DIY Marble Table Top

You might remember this chrome and faux walnut table we thrifted a month ago? It was the perfect fit for our kitchen nook, but after moving in our mid century buffet, the table needed some help! Suddenly there was just a little too much clashing going on in our little space.  I’ve always been such a huge fan of marble top tulip tables like this one! They were just a bit out of my price range, so I was happy to take this $15 table. But then I was pleasantly surprised when Joel decided to give this guy a little makeover! Simply using grey, black and white spray paint, he was able to create a marble design. He added high gloss to give it some shine and voila! A new table! It completely changes the look of the entire room and I couldn’t be more happy.  Before the room felt heavy and a bit dark. Now, the space feels light and open – amazing what a little DIY can do! I might not have been able to have my dream table, but this one is a great alternative if you don’t have that kind of money to spend!  What do you think of this simple transformation? Be sure to check back next week – I’ll be revealing our new kitchen lighting soon!  XOXO, Lidy Feel free to leave a comment!  You can also follow Hello Lidy by...

Thrifty Finds: Brass Bowl Turned Planter

Another Thursday, another thrifty find! I came across this lovely brass bowl a few weeks ago and decided it would make the perfect planter!  I love any kind of metallic decor, whether it be copper like I used for our front entrance or pops of brass like this little collection on our buffet! It’s great for all seasons, but I’m especially loving it for fall!  Brass still has the earthy tones I love, but with a little bling! I feel like when I add brass or copper to my space, it instantly brightens it up. Plus, you find them by the dozens at thrift stores and they are always cheap!  This bowl is working great as a planter, it’s fun to use it for other purposes other than the obvious! You can always make it a bowl again – perhaps for fruit or decor items? The options are always there!  Are you over brass yet or are you still loving it a little like I am?! Fall Yarn Art

Just over a year ago, I went to Alt for the very first time in San Francisco. I’m sure you remember reading my recap and all about how amazing it was! It was there that I first spotted the beginning of the DIY yarn art trend . A matter of fact, I’m pretty sure it was the first of its kind (dare I say)! While attending our sponsored dinner with Creative Bug, I spotted these amazing pieces displayed as decor on the walls! It took me a long time to finally give in, but I decided to do an inspired DIY just in time for fall!  The thing I love about this project is it’s SO easy to do and it has such a huge impact in any space. It’s probably way over done now, but I just had to try it for myself. I decided instead of hanging my yarn, I would drape it to create flow. It also creates this illusion that the yarn is coming out from the branch, rather than just being tied onto it.  I decided to use a branch like I did in this project a while back. Bringing a part of nature indoors is a really great way to instantly make your home feel holiday ready! I had a lot of fun creating this piece and I might try some other variations of it, but we will see. For now, I love the pop of color it brings in our home!  I like to mix up my fall and Halloween decor, I don’t want to focus on one season over the other! What do you...

Dining Room Design | Choosing Wallpaper

As our dining room design slowly comes together, I’m becoming more and more excited! I’ve teamed up with Walls Republic to find the perfect wallpaper for our space! I ordered the four based on my previous Dining Room Inspiration. They were so generous as to throw in a few more so I could really have a feel for their product and all the other possibilities! They know best and it’s good to have a few samples to really get an idea of what you want. Walls Republic has some of the best selection! I was so impressed with the samples, I could just tell the quality was phenomenal. I cannot wait to put some wallpaper up on these walls!! I made a [very] simple video to show you 8 steps I take to finding that right wallpaper. It can be daunting, but it’s so worth it in the end! Ok, so judging aside, I hope you learn a thing or two! I am no stranger to choosing wallpaper as an option for home decor! You may recall our California Dining Room? The wallpaper was so subtle, but this time I feel like taking more of a risk! I can’t wait to show you what we decided on – any guesses? http://www.hellolidy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Wallpaper.mp4 *Music by First Aid Kit – Winter Is All Over You (baauer Remix) XOXO, Lidy Feel free to leave a comment! Thrifty Finds: Mid Century Walnut Buffet

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time to share our recent Thrifty Finds! To be honest, it’s been a few weeks since we went to any thrift stores. Then earlier this week we thought we would just get out of the house for a bit. I am so glad we decided to take a peek in the shops that day, as soon as I walked into our local thrift store I was smacked in the face. We spotted this gorgeous beauty!! Yes, it was just waiting there for me. Or so I told myself. It was in pretty rough shape and didn’t even want to know how much they were asking. To my surprise she asked $40. As Joel and I discussed whether this was something we really wanted to take home with us, she came back and said if we take it that day (so she could bring out some strollers mind you) she would sell it to us for $35. SOLD! How can you walk away from that?!  It had been pretty beaten up. There were some very visible scratches and damage to the wood that went deep. When we got it home, we scrubbed it with soapy water and scoured the entire piece with a course scouring pad and lemon oil. Then again, but with a fine scouring pad. We considered sanding the piece, but because of the depth of some of these scratches we were afraid we would compromise the top layer of veneer. We just put a lot of elbow grease into it and it actually improved substantially! We managed to get rid of a lot of the damage...

Wednesday’s Wishlist

Happy October friends!! Hard to believe isn’t it? Not to meniton, it’s already the middle of the week! What is going on?! I’m back today sharing a few of my favorite finds over the past week – hope you enjoy.  I have an addiction to pillows and I’m not ashamed of it! I have been in love with this pillow for a while now and I think I might want it. It’s navy, it’s spotted and I think it’s just lovely!  This travel bag is so gorgeous – heck, I’ll take it!! When the hubby leaves town for a few days or needs to run to a meeting, he can throw all his man stuff in this handsome bag and voila!  If you’re anything like me, you always need at least one – or two – or three comfy knitted sweaters for the fall/winter. This poncho would be positively lovely with some jeans or even leggings and some cute winter booties. It can be both casual and dressy and I love that!  Foxes, bears and raccoons? Enough said, the kids are getting one of these darling sleeping bags!  What do you think of this week’s wishlist? Anything catch your eye? Dining Room Inspiration

In the next few weeks, I’ll be teaming up with a few of my favorite brands to share with you our dining room makeover! These kinds of projects take time and can be so hard to execute because there are so many amazing choices out there!  So far, we’ve basically just moved our furniture into the space. It feels like it could be our own, but only because we have some very unique furniture pieces that are special to us. Everything else doesn’t seem quite right. The wall color is actually really pretty and I think if we had other furniture and decor, it might just work. The window treatments and lighting definitely need to be updated! So far, we’ve decided on the wall color: Benjamin Moore Super White. Surprised? Probably not! The main changes I am focusing on right now are obviously the wall colors, bringing some pattern via wallpaper, window treatments and my favorite – lighting! I have two options of how the room could go. The first option feels classic and feminine. The curtains have a very subtle pattern that’s very retro inspired. The lighting is a cluster chandelier that feels minimal and just lovely! I could have this piece in every room – honestly. The wallpaper choices (here and here) are heavy on the floral and the colors more neutral as to not overwhelm the space. This whole room design would match our mid century vibe very well!  The second option is much more modern and bold. The curtains are a bright and basic white. The lighting is very sleek and is definitely a more risky choice for us. But...

Simple Fall Bouquet

I’ve got to be honest, I don’t know a whole lot about plants or flowers. Other than some of them smell really good and look very pretty. I decided it was high time to learn a few things here and there while I play around with making pretty (but simple) bouquets!  This weekend, my family and I walked around a market and I spotted a lovely little flower shop with a small selection of flowers. I wanted to make a very simple and modern bouquet for our home and decided to just grab a few that I thought looked pretty together. I basically winged it. I absolutely love greenery – I sometimes think they are a bit underrated at times. I wanted to design a bouquet that was completely opposite what you would usually see. I really loved the idea of mostly green with just a pop of color. And I have to be honest, it was refreshing! Here is what I used in my Simple Fall Bouquet: 1. Ruscus: a low evergreen Eurasian shrub, with flat shoots and stiff spine-tipped leaves. These also have medicinal benefits as well!  2. Yarrow: a very general occurring plant in the wild and is also considered a herb. So next time you’re out hiking, keep a look out!  3. Myrtle: also an evergreen shrub or small tree with aromatic leaves – these truly have a lovely and refreshing scent. We actually use to have a lot of these trees in our neighborhood back in California. A little piece of our past I suppose!  Sometimes it can be quite fun putting together your own little bouquet for home. It doesn’t have to be expensive and you can...
