Here we go again… This month has been just one of those months, I guess. The kind where everything takes more effort than usual. House work piles up. Relationships scattered. Future completely unknown. My legs haven’t been shaved in weeks. Sorry husband. Sometimes I lose myself in the midst of all the mess. I forget to be happy and content. When I was on the plane flying to Canada, I looked out my window to the open sky. I found that we were surrounded by some of the most beautiful clouds I have ever seen. I know, they’re just clouds. But sometimes the clouds remind me to stop looking at what’s closing in and look up to what’s ahead. I love taking pictures of those moments when that peace fills my chaotic life. I could stare at the sky forever, if it meant I would have more peace when pressure starts closing in. I hope you find your little bit of peace today too. ... read more

Finds, finds, finds!

Finds, finds, finds!   My husband is just as obsessed with thrifty finds as I am! It’s refreshing to have him along with me when I am on the hunt for something original and unique because he gets it. He isn’t grossed out by the mossy, damp smell of an antique store or afraid to dig through a pile of old “junk”. I guess that’s why he is more than the man I married, he is my best friend and has a lot of the same taste as I do.  He is also a lot more handy when it comes to fixing things up and does an amazing makeover to the old and beat up. Today after work, I walked in and he had a few surprises awaiting me! Best part about his surprise, it cost him no more than $10. Things like this just make my day: He spotted this old record player at a yard sale. I love it! He and I have been tossing ideas about projects we want to do together. We’ve been talking for a while about the popular cake holders you see almost everywhere now. He has been keeping his eyes open for retro plates and decided to make a few today. I was so excited, I was already trying to figure out where to put them! Sometimes it scares me when he can read my mind! I’ve been wanting a retro piece in our kitchen. Something original and cute! I can’t believe he found this adorable owl: he is cute, cuddly, red and retro!  I love the little things you find that make your... read more

Stumbled upon something wonderful… As mentioned before, I am always on the look out for cool markets and such. While in Calgary, Alberta, Canada I stumbled upon something wonderful! Market Collective is a fantastic community of artists, artisans and musicians who gather together to showcase their amazing work! Located in the trendy area of Kensington, you wouldn’t want to pass this up if you happened to be in the neighborhood. In 2008, this dream turned into a reality, thanks to two local women. Now, it is a thriving space that exists to promote local artists and Calgary’s amazing culture! I was lucky enough to be visiting that same weekend and had the pleasure to walk around and appreciate the diverse talent of these artists. Here is a small sample of some of them! The talent in that one place was phenomenal!  Hoakon Loves Helga is an amazing artist who handcrafts accessories. Here, she used old leather jackets to make adorable clutch purses! She also had cute vintage jewelry, which is always fabulous to look at! You can also check her out at Antler Magazine, which is a digital fashion, art and culture magazine!  Amy Victoria Wakefield is an amazing photographer who is also skilled in editorial, conceptual, fine art, advertising, portrait and fashion! These are some BEAUTIFUL prints I came across! I seriously wouldn’t know which one to choose, since they are all unique and amazing pieces of work! I would have to say, she is living one of my many dreams!  Tara Put is an amazing artist who specializes in some cute and creative drawings! She has an amazing... read more

Little Bean A good friend and I were so inspired by this cute blog called BlueBird. It documents a mom’s journey through pregnancy week by week.  We thought it was such a great idea, so we are going to borrow it. But just for the next 5 months! This is my dear friend Kyla’s first journey through her pregnancy…hope you enjoy this month by month documentation of a little miracle! We are new to this, so forgive the missing first three months! We love you baby, but we are a little disorganized right now!  Dear Bean, We just laid our eyes upon your sweet little face! And let me tell you, you are sweet! We are so in love with you it is driving us mad! Thank you for being so good to me, these last 4 months have been the best of my life. You are so easy and allow me to cherish every second of this pregnancy. I hope that you can hear your daddy’s sweet voice praying for you every night. I cant wait to know what you are, 3 short weeks! All things used and bruised: My 3 in 1  I am always on the look out for vintage finds, whether from the 40s to the 80s! I find myself attracted to shady shops, overlooked yard sales and random markets along the way. In these places I find so many treasures. Sure, I love new stuff just as much as anyone else. Sometimes it’s necessary to buy something less worn and torn, but it’s the used and bruised stuff that I am inspired by. As a little girl, I would spend a lot of time at my Oma’s homes. Both places were like museums to me. Stuff from all over the world (mostly from Europe where they both immigrated from). A lot of their belongings were antique or vintage and had a wonderful story attached to it. When I look at my home, I feel at peace. All the little things I find along the way have a little story with it too. Whether it was a road trip with my husband, a vacation back home in Canada or just one of those pick me ups on a bad day. They each mean something to me and give off a warm environment in my home.  This is one of those used items I picked up while on vacation in Canada on a mother-daughter trip to the city. I dragged her to a thrift store and she was patient with me as I looked through a lot of junk. My eyes caught this cute vintage tray with matching cup holders. At first glance, it doesn’t look like much, but with a... read more

Simply cute I went on a girl date with my mother while in Canada. We perused the shops of a trendy area of Edmonton, Alberta: Whyte Ave. There you will find one of a kind shops, selling one of a kind items. Today I was fascinated with this one particular item I came across at a shop called Colour Blind. There you will find name brands, but also local artists work. One of these artists calls herself Mismatch Accessories. Oddly enough her blog centers around food; however, it is her lovely handmade rosette necklace that caught my eye. The rosette necklace is a delicate piece of jewelry. Not only that, but it’s super easy to recreate and the sky is the limit to your design taste. Now you can see what you’re made of when it comes to your creative side. I think this is on my list of DIY’s. How wonderful that we can save a few dollars and create our own fashion piece! It’s wonderful, indeed.... read more

Tea fix on a cloudy day  It’s been somewhat cloudy and rainy during my time here in Canada. I don’t mind the rain. Last night I woke up to thunder so loud, it shook the walls in the house. I miss that. You really do take things for granted sometimes. It’s during these kinds of days, I wrap myself in a blanket, plunk myself on the couch and throw in a movie. The one movie I seem to think about often is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s a classic Audrey Hepburn movie. If you haven’t watched it, then you may want to check it out sometime….. “Listen…you know those days when you get the mean reds?” –Holly.“The mean reds? You mean like the blues?” –Fred (Paul)“No… the blues are because you’re getting fat or because it’s been raining too long. You’re just sad, that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?” –Holly.“Sure.” –Fred (Paul).Today I got myself a case of the mean reds….I guess simply because I just want things to happen so bad. To top it off, I have a great mixture of people who are behind me to support and encourage me and a few who simply don’t. To them, I might be a shadow of someone else, a reflection of someone I’m not or a mirage of a lie in the distance. I like to think of these low times a test. To rise above and keep your head up. Keep going until you reach your dreams and hopes. No one can... read more

DIY project One: September This perfect, yet simple project comes from Brenna Berger at paper + ink. She shares her amazing custom invitation designs on her blog (and wouldn’t that be such a fun job!).  Paper is the most clever and cheap way to exercise all sorts of wonderful ideas. I’m a fan of simple and I like how this project gives off a very modern feel. Not to mention, white is such a fantastic color for keeping any room classy and clean. More photos to follow once the girls and I pull off our first craft night! For now, here is a little peek to show what the end of this project should look like.... read more

Eat Pray Love Yesterday was opening night for the newest Julia Robert’s movie, Eat Pray Love. All I know is that the two hours I sat in the theatre, all I could think about was waking up today and starting to make a step towards my passions and dreams. I love this quote: “Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.”— Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love)I have been struggling trying to find my place in my little world and who or what I want to be. Although I can’t pack my bags and travel the world for inspiration and renewed thinking, I can start that change where I am today. I’ve always loved photography, being creative and taking chances. It’s time I do something about it. And just knowing that I’m going to do something about it helps me walk with a little more happiness already. In honor of this movie, I decided to take a chance and start something new. It’s a baby step for sure, but it will hold me to this motivation I feel right now and not allow for it to die as the days, weeks and months pass by. Starting September I will be officially hosting a night that involves eating,... read more
